2nd GM European Cup in Amsterdam, August 2009

ENGLAND ACHIEVE A CLEAN SWEEP

England GM Team

At the THC Hurley club in Amstelveen, England managed to win all 3 main competitions, GM, GGM and SGM (60+, 65+ and 70+) as well as the 2 Tournament Trophy events. This was  a unique achievement, although some of the final matches were extremely close and could have gone either way, particularly the GM Final between England and the Netherlands, where England scored the equaliser in the last few minutes of normal time. The ensuing penalty flick competition was highly dramatic with both sides missing chances till England finally scored the winning flick.
The hockey played was of a high standard, especially considering the age of players involved. The tournament matches were organised and managed with great efficiency (matches for 22 teams in a span of 3 days involving a total of 42 matches!), and thanks are due to Frank van't Hek,the Tournament Director, for his tight control of the matches, and to Wim van Noordwijk for his organisation of the umpires.
Peter Child, WGMA President, in officially closing the tournament following the prize-giving, announced the top events for 2010 as being the next European Supervets tournament in Belgium at the beginning of June (the possible venue of Braxgata H.C. to be formally confirmed), and the GM Hockey World Cup in Capetown, South Africa, from 15th to 24th September.
