The tournament was  played parallel to the second Masters World Cup. This was  the first occasion that WGMA and IMHA have held both tournaments at the same time and place.

Kenji Hamanaka, Vice President Asia, gave a farewall speech in which he expressed the appreciation of WGMA to Singapore Veterans’ Hockey Association for their great efforts in organising two major GM tournaments, Asian Cup and Singapore Grand Masters Cup.   Grand Masters Hockey World Cup 2012

Oxford, England

in August 2012

We are pleased to announce that the Joint World Cup Organising Committee set up by England Hockey and The LX Hockey Club has recommended that the 2012 Grand Masters Hockey World Cup be held in Oxford, England during the last two weeks of August, the provisional dates being August 15-24. The dates set for the tournament are immediately after the Olympic Games in London whose closing ceremony is on August 12. The Paralympics start at the end of August so we shall have the sporting headlines to ourselves!  The host club will be Oxford Hawks Hockey Club who have just completed the installation of two new sand dressed pitches both with automated watering systems.

Oxford, The City of Dreaming Spires, is famous the world over for its University and its place in history. For over 800 years, it has been a home to royalty and scholars, and was the site of an established town as far back as the 9th century. Visitors will have the opportunity to try punting on the river Cherwell or can visit the spectacular Blenheim Palace , the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, at nearby Woodstock. Henley-on-Thames and other riverside towns and villages are within easy travelling distance, as is the beautiful Cotswold countryside and London is only an hour away by road, rail or coach.

We are confident that England will host another memorable tournament. An organising committee has already been set up, and they will forward to you more detailed information on the plans for the tournament in due course.

 IN MEMORIAM
of
EDOARDO FORNARO
(1939 - 2010)

WGMA was shocked to hear the sad news that our very good friend Edoardo Fornaro, a long-term member of Gens Italica tragically passed away from us at the end of October.
He was one of the world's real gentlemen, a man of honour, and was always a friendly, amusing, intelligent hockey comrade, also blessed with a wonderful joie de vivre.
He was also an important and invaluable foundation stone of Gens Italica, and his important contribution to their organisation will be sorely missed.
The WGMA Board extend their deepest feeling of sorrow to his wife Inga, and to the fellow members of Gens Italica.  Edoardo is a sad loss to the Grand Masters organisation and we will always hold him in our fondest memory.

WGMA Umpires

Hallo, Hockey Umpires of the World, wherever you are!

WGMA, through their national members, are always on the look out for umpires willing and able to participate in the regular WGMA tournaments. Although the players are senior players of 60 years of age and older, the matches are played at a high standard, and require umpires capable of keeping up with and controlling the game. The following criteria, based on standard FIH regulations, clearly highlight the umpiring requirements we are seeking.

If you are interested and would like further information, please contact :

our Senior Umpire Manager, Jaap Quarles van Ufford,

email:  jaapquarles@hotmail.com

or Peter Child, email : peterchild@onlinehome.de

or Bernard Verbunt, email : bverbuntsr@belgacom.net

For information, future tournaments planned are :

-        WGMA Hockey European Cup, Neuss, Germany,   23rd – 26th August 2011

-        WGMA Hockey World Cup, England 2012.

Other intermediate tournaments/matches will also be planned in the course of time.

Umpire criteria

Modern hockey is increasingly demanding on the umpires. Players are fitter, faster

and are constantly developing new skills and tactics. It is therefore essential that

umpires adopt the same spirit and know-how through a thorough preparation

and by keeping up with the new FIH rules.

Candidates must:

(a)       be regularly active as an umpire of an FIH affiliated National

Association or have a proven track record of such skills.

(b)      Have a complete knowledge of the latest FIH Hockey rules

as set out by the FIH Hockey rules Board and Umpiring Committee,

and they should also know how to interpret these rules.

(c)       Be medically healthy and able to meet the fitness

              standards.

                              (d)      Be able to communicate in English and lead the games:
                                         • in team spirit with his colleagues
                                         • with proven consistent performance
                                         • showing good positioning, mobility and fitness skills
                                         • using the right volume of whistling
                                         • giving clear signalling
                                         • showing commitment and concentration
                                         • conducting the right interpretation of rules

England triumph in LX Home Internationals

In the LX Home Internationals played at Swansea on 3rd July 2010, England came first, Wales second and Scotland third with England beating Scotland 4-1 and Wales 8-0 and Wales beating Scotland 5-0.
In the first Over 60s match, England triumphed 4-1 against Scotland in a match which they dominated but where Scotland were unlucky when the umpire signalled a short corner as Dunlop despatched the ball behind the England keeper. Scotland defended stoutly but could not keep out two goals in each half including a Hutchings hat-trick. Crichton gave the Scots a bit of pride by netting with a fine shot at a short corner in the closing minutes.
In the second match, Wales eased to a best-ever performance against the Scots, winning 5-0. They were rarely troubled and played some excellent hockey with the three newcomers since the European tournament in Boom – Martin Brough, Ralph Thomas and Bernie Wheeler – contributing significantly to the win. Martin Kavanagh scored early on from a short corner and again with the faintest of touches when Bernie Wheeler crashed the ball into the circle. The other three were opportunistic goals with one from Ian Towler and a brace from Ralph Thomas.
There was little time, however, for Wales to be carried away with the euphoria of such a fine win as two hours later they were due to play England. It was then Wales’ misfortune to come up against a superbly professional and accomplished England side who scored twice in the first five minutes and continued to play some magnificent hockey for the rest of the match, winning eventually 8-0.

The Wales team, however, learned quickly after the experience of Saturday and matters improved markedly during the Sunday friendly, which England won 3-1. England scored three first half-goals and Wales replied with one in the second half from Ralph Thomas. In an excellent, hard fought match, England continued to play the accomplished hockey of the previous day but, on this occasion, were almost matched by their opponents.

In the Over 65s international between England and Scotland, Scotland put in a creditable performance but a brace of goals each side of half time ensured the trophy for the English in a game in which Scotland resisted well but failed to make an impact in the final third. The friendly Over 65 match played on Sunday produced the same score-line, 4-0 but Scotland showed signs of improvement in teamwork and passing which they will hope to build on before the World Championships in Cape Town in September. In the Over 60s friendly, their younger counterparts shocked England by taking an early lead through Dunlop which they held until just before half time when Hutchings scored the first of his three goals, adding a second shortly after. The tiring Scots could not prevent a very sharp England forward line adding a further three goals to make the final score 5-1.
It was good to see a Wales Second Eleven take the field in the Over 65s competition showing that there are an increasing number of ‘Dros Chwe Deg’ players in the Principality. Led by Dave Maas and his Vice-Captain Keith Davies, not many of the players have reached 65 yet but within a couple of years, hopefully, Wales will be able to put out a competitive side at that level as well. In the event, they performed creditably, losing 4 - 0 to England Over 65s on the Saturday and 2 – 0 on the Sunday.

International Match Results: Over 60s
England 4 Scotland 1
Wales 5 Scotland 0
Wales 0 England 8

International Result: Over 65s
England 4 Scotland 0

Friendlies on Sunday: Over 60s
England 3 Wales 1
England 5 Scotland 1

Friendlies on Sunday: Over 65s

   Asian Veterans Over 60s Hockey

First major steps have been made to promote Veterans Over 60 hockey in Asia,
with Japan and Korea reaching agreement to hold two friendly matches in
       Seoul on 5th and 6th June, 2010.

The matches were held at the Korea National Sport University hockey
       field. The results were;
First match on 5th June         Korea 5 - 1 Japan
Second match on 6th June   Korea 6 - 5 Japan

The games were performed in fair and friendly but competitive atmosphere.
Korean members prepared this event with well-maintained pitch, capable
referees, specially prepared flags, free drinks, and a warm welcome.
A sophisticated dinner party was held at an authentic Korean
        restaurant and  a good time
was enjoyed together.

        Various subjects were discussed for the future;
       1) It was mutually agreed that this event is just the beginning of a lasting friendship
        between the two organisations.
       2) Korean teams will visit Osaka in November for the second event.
       3) Korea will consider participating in the East Asia Regional GM tournament in
Singapore in November 2011 which is currently being planned by
       Singapore Hockey Association.
       4) Korea will consider positively joining WGMA in near future.

       Note :
The WGMA Vice President for Asia, Mr. Kenji Hamanaka,  introduced Japan as
new WGMA members in 2008, and they took part in the Grand Masters Hockey
World Cup in Hong Kong in September, 2008.

Letter from Daan Holsboer, New Alliance Hon. Secretary,
dated 6th September 2009
----------
  ALLIANCE INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY CLUB
  Friendship and Fair Play

Dear hockey friends,

In its general assembly meeting of 26 August 2009 Alliance Hockey Club has decided to
award to the founder of Alliance Hockey Club, Mr. Johan Herbert, the title "Honorary President for Life". Mr Johan Herbert has for many years, from its inception in 2002 until
this year, run Alliance Hockey Club mostly all by himself with only occasional help from
others. In that manner he has created the possibility for players over 60 years of age to participate in international hockey tournaments when these players could not form a team from their own country or were not selected by their own country.
Alliance Hockey Club
has become, through this concept, a "breeding ground" for national over 60 teams in countries where hockey is not a large sport.

The members of Alliance Hockey Club are very grateful for the enormous effort Mr.Johan Herbert had invested in the club and by acclamation the title was awarded to him.

As Mr.Johan Herbert has decided to step back from actively playing hockey and therefore also from managing Alliance Hockey Club, a new executive committee for Alliance Hockey Club was elected during the general assembly. The following persons were elected:
President: Mr. Jorgos Dramitinos, Grammou  Street  14, 15669 Pappagou
-  Athens, Greece, tel. +302106531366/+30 697 7451181 (mob),
email : jorgos.dramitinos@hockey.org.gr
Hon. Secretary: Mr. Daan Holsboer, Holterweg 10A, 7475 AV Markelo, Netherlands,
tel. +31547363538 / +31622487
832 (mob),
e-mail: dh.holsboer@xs4all.nl

Hon. Treasurer: Mr. Peter Terleski, Little Aston Lane 11, Little Aston, Sutton Coldfield/ W. Midlands B74 3UA, Great Britain, tel. +441213535602 / +447931727583 (mob),
e-mail: peterterleski@hotmail.com

Alliance Hockey Club has participated since 2002 in all major international tournaments for players of 60 years of age or older and has been present in many of the smaller events
during that time also. In the period since 2002 the strength of the Alliance teams varied
from event to event. It is the intention of the new executive committee to field teams that
can compete with
success in the category in which they are entered. Since Alliance is an international club, it cannot enter in the national divisions in European or World Cup tournaments. The third place (after England and Germany) out of the six teams in the
TT-A division during the 2nd Grand Masters Hockey European Cup in
Amstelveen gives
an indication that Alliance aims at serious hockey when that is called for. For other events
a more "social" approach is better and the Alliance teams entered there will reflect the character of the event.

A new website for Alliance Hockey Club is in the process of being made at http://www.alliancehockey.net
(NB. the old site was in Belgium with the extension .be, this
new one can be used worldwide).

We, as new executive committee for Alliance Hockey Club, look forward to seeing all of you
in the near future and work together as much as possible on behalf of over-60 hockey in
the world.

Best regards,
Daan Holsboer

                                               Alliance International Hockey Club

                                          Over 60 international hockey

60 years of age! Does the game continue for the aged hockey player?
The answer is simple; "yes, it does"!

The FIH has recognised the World Grand Masters Association (WGMA) as the body to promote hockey for persons of 60 years and older. The WGMA for that purpose organizes several tournaments each year. In those tournaments national teams compete for various cups. The participants in those tournaments are grouped in the categories 60+, 65+ and
even 70+ (named respectively Grand Masters, Great Grand Masters and Senior Grand Masters). In parallel to the tournaments for national teams, these tournaments also have
a division for a Tournament Trophy, for second teams or for non-national teams. In this
way the possibility for persons of 60 years or older to play hockey in an international
setting is guaranteed.
National Associations are the members of WGMA.

In 2002, when the Grand Masters World Cup was played in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia),
several persons wanted to play, but were unable to get together a full team of their own country. The foremost of these was Mr. Johan Herbert from Belgium. Together with
several others he formed a team comprising players of different nationalities and thus
was able to successfully take part in the Kuala Lumpur tournament. The team was entered under the name of "Alliance". All members of that team were very enthusiastic about being able to play at an international level and it was decided that Alliance International Hockey Club (website  1) would become a formal club and also the only international member of
WGMA, with Mr. Johan Herbert as its first president.
Today the club has ca. 115 members from 12 nationalities and takes part in all the tournaments organised by WGMA and also in tournaments organised by others all over
the world. The club welcomes new members from any country.

Practical matters:
- How to become a member: simply write an e-mail to the secretary (see below) expressing your wish to become a member. In a reply you will receive the necessary form to fill in.
- Costs: you pay only when you are playing, EUR 25,00 per tournament plus your part of the registration fee for the tournament. Any expenses (travel, lodging, meals etc.) are of course your own costs.
- Nomination for tournaments: at the end of a calendar year (or more often if needed) the
club secretary sends to all members a list of tournaments for the coming year(s).
Any member interested in taking part in one (or more) of the tournaments listed writes an e-mail to the secretary or to his local Alliance-coordinator (if such a person exists) naming himself as a potential player for the tournaments he mentions in that e-mail.
- Selection of players after their nomination: if more than 16 players have nominated themselves to take part in (one division of) one tournament, then the executive committee
of the club will make a selection.
- Managers, captains: for each tournament there is one person who acts as manager for the teams, each team has a captain. Generally, volunteers fill these functions, but the executive committee has the final decision which person shall be manager and/or captain.
- Playing kit (shirt, shorts, socks): shorts & socks need to be bought by the player.
Numbered shirts are property of the club and are issued at those tournaments where numbered shirts are needed.
- Current executive committee:
o Mr. Jorgos Dramitinos (from Greece): President
o Mr. Daniel (Daan) Holsboer (from The Netherlands): secretary
o Mr. Peter Terleski (from England): treasurer.
