New Zealand, 30th May – 1st June 2009
Australia win inaugural Tasman Tri Series

The Australian Grand Masters toured the South and North Islands of New Zealand and completed the tour with a 3-match Test Series in Auckland against the New Zealand 60's team.

The Tri Series was a great struggle between the Australian and New Zealand teams with very little separating the teams.

Game 1 was won by Australia by the narrow margin of one goal. Just prior to half time Don Richards, Aussie Captain, scored from a penalty corner. The NZ team had double the PC count than Australia but were unable to take advantage of this.
Final score, Australia won 1 – 0 .

Game 2 was an even closer Game with neither team being able to find the net by full time. Teams then went to a Penalty Stroke contest to get a result, with two brilliant saves from Aussie Keeper Brian Seboa. Australia won 4 – 2 (Australia scorers : - Asley Challenor, Bob Claxton, Kieth Chay, Argit Bhullar) and with that won the series.

Game 3 saw the New Zealand take full advantage of the tired Australia team when they dominated early play to go into a 2-goal lead and it was not until late in the 2nd half that Chris O'Dempsey slotted in a brilliant individual goal for a final score of 2 - 1 to New Zealand.

The New Zealand team have given a very strong undertaking that they will compete at the next WGMA World Cup in Cape Town in September 2010 and they would certainly be an exciting new opponent for all the other Grand Masters teams.

Finally, in the Womens Series Australia 50+ won 2 games to 1, and New Zealand 55+ won 2 games to 1.

Leandro Negre elected as FIH President
29 November 2008

Leandro Negre is the new President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The Spanish sports administrator was elected during the FIH Congress in Los Angeles, USA
on Saturday for a four years term. Negre received more votes that his opponent Els van Breda Vriesman, Netherlands who has been the FIH President since 2001. A total of 89 National Associations were present at the FIH Congress.

Negre, President of the European Hockey Federation before being elected as FIH President, was delighted with the result ‘I am very happy to be elected and I would like
to thank the National Associations for voting for me’, Negre said.

WGMA Comment

Leandro is a great friend and supporter of Veterans hockey, and has been of great assistance to WGMA as EHF President in recent years, encouraging the further development of Veterans Over 60s hockey in Europe. He also helped us in organising
the first ever Grand Masters  European Cup tournament to be held in Spain in March
2008, by introducing us to his local club, Junior FC in Sant Cugat, Barcelona, and the
tournament with his assistance proved to be a great success. We are sure that WGMA
(and IMHA for Masters Over 40s hockey) will continue to receive his support in furthering the organisation of Veterans hockey throughout the world.

Thanks must also be extended to the former President, Els van Breda Vriesman, for her invaluable assistance in obtaining official recognition of WGMA by the FIH in 2006 - she
has been a keen supporter of Masters and Grand Masters hockey development for many years.

Further Appointments

Besides the election of Leandro Negre as President, Annabel Dillon (SIN) was re-elected as Vice President. Furthermore, Anne Ellis (WAL), Renita Garard (AUS), Sue Neill (CAN) were re-elected as FIH Executive Board Member, while Stephan Abel (GER) and Jan Albers (NED) were elected as new FIH Executive Board Members. Outgoing Executive Board Members Rosa de Massa (ARG) and Wolfgang Rommel (GER) received the award as FIH Member of Honor.

Jan ten Hoopen
1913-2009

Founder and
Honorary President of the Zestigplussers

We are sad to announce the death of Jan ten Hoopen. Jan was the founding father of Over 60s hockey in the Netherlands and played in the Dutch national Over 50 league until the age of 74. At the end of that season he arranged a gathering of all his hockeyfriends from around the country who were still playing and who were over 60 years young.

This was a great success and the following year, 1989, Jan felt the need to establish something more permanent and founded the NHC “De Zestigplussers”. During the first year a group of 45 players met regularly around the country and played a couple of games amongst themselves. In June 2009 the club celebrated its 20th Anniversary and now, as a member of the KNHB (the Royal Netherlands Hockey Board),it has over 450 active members.

Bernard Verbunt, WGMA Vice-President Europe and former President of the Zestigplussers, paid this tribute to his long-time friend:

Jan was a gentleman in the true sense of the word, and made it his main purpose to let friendship and sportsmanship prevail at all times. Among his many friends were people like Philip Lach de Bère, Jan Vis and Johan Ignatius and he had excellent contacts in England, Belgium and France, permitting Jan to export his idea to other countries. The first international match took place in Brussels back in February 1990. We all recall the fine tournaments in Lille, Kortrijk, Bussum and Rotterdam were Jan was very much present, enjoying in his own gentle way being part of the hockey family.
Jan continued playing well past his 85th birthday and enjoyed very much being among his many friends. We are all indebted to him in one way or the other, especially myself. As one of his successors , I could always seek his advice and was rewarded with sound ideas. Jan will always be remembered for what he was, a true and loyal friend!

Over 60s hockey now has a significant position in world hockey with over 3.500 players in 12 countries, and is organised by the World Grand Masters Association, officially recognised by the FIH.

Jan ten Hoopen’s baby has grown up quickly and is in good health.

His spirit, enthusiasm and sportmanship will always be remembered.

Fine Performance of Over 70-Teams of Germany and The Netherlands within the supporting programme of the Women’s Champions Trophy event in Mönchengladbach,
23.05.2008

Germany Over 70s

Applause from the public for an impressive 20-Metre sprint, or for a successful attack : the Over70 national teams of the Netherlands and Germany played against each other in a supporting event of the Samsung Champions Trophy on Thursday in the Warsteiner HockeyPark in Mönchengladbach. The commendably fit veterans showed that it was not only a matter of sporting rivalry, but also of coming together socially for an evening meal and drinks after the match. The game ended in a satisfactory 1:1 draw for both sides.

Attack by Holland

The game was hard-fought, with the German team having most of the game in the first half despite few scoring chances and 2 short corners, with the Dutch team defending well. There was much more action in the 2nd half, and in the 52th minute Walter Hagedoorn scored the first goal for the ‘Oranje’. The German team pressed forward and in the 62nd minute scored the deserved equaliser through Frank Mäusert.
After the match, both teams spent an enjoyable and relaxing evening together.

The German Ü70 team was founded in Leipzig in 2007. After a modest start in a 4 Nations tournament in Hanover, the first win (2-1) was achieved against the Netherlands. The record now stands at one win and one draw for Germany against their ‘old’ rivals.
